The Bharat Gold Mines Limited is a PSU under the administrative control of the Ministry of Mines and is now was set up in 1972 to operate the Kolar Gold Mines taken over by the Central government from the Government of was primarily engaged in gold mining from its captive mines in the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) located mainly in Karnataka but partly also in Andhra Pradesh.

The Kolar gold field has an 800 km long and 4 km wide belt for bearing the gold. The first operations of mining in this area started in 1870 and since then, it has become the largest gold supplier in India. It is also one of the deepest mines and now, gold is available in a depth of more than 3,500 meters.

The first mining operations in the Kolar Gold Fields started in 1871 and the area still continues to be the largest supplier of gold in India. About 3,539 thousand tonnes of gold ore having 17,738 kg of gold content have been proved during the recent surveys conducted by the Geological Survey of India for locating new lodes.
