An historic mining landscape dating back to the C17 and probably earlier. It is characterised by small bell pits, surrounded by heaps of spoil, and interspersed with ironstone pits. Probably the best remaining example of such a landscape in the Telford area. New Works Lane dates to at least the C14.

Mining in the area had almost ceased by the 1880s but continued at the Furnace site. The colliery at Lawley Furnace was opencast in the late 1940s, but had shut by 1958. The area of operations monitored by the watching brief was bisected by a concrete track, the haul road for the former opencast .
